I've gotten the best swag ever this week! Youtube wristband! LOL.
I missed yesterday, so a two part/final SXSW update.
Be warned, I've seen 12 movies in the past two days....30 total in 9 days. DANG. So, 12 films I saw briefly reviewed!
Marwencol: This won best documentary this week. I loved it. It's about a man with brain damage that learns to cope by creating a new world for himself out of Barbie dolls. He takes accidentally brilliant pictures of these dolls. Google them immediately!
Trash Humpers: As a minor fan of Harmony Korine, I was excited for this film, but it ended up just annoying me. In theory it was very cool, but the whole "plot" just...ugh.
Dogtooth: My favorite narrative film from the entire festival. It's about a family in Greece that has never left its property. Shit gets weird, but it's beautiful and quirky and somehow insanely realistic.
Strummerville: Boring. Sorry. It's about Joe Strummer's charity for musicians in London, but the doc itself was just messy. And the director was so cocky when he was on stage. No thanks.
Brotherhood: So. Intense. I basically gripped my armrests in the first five seconds of the film and never let go. It's about a frat hazing gone terribly, terribly wrong. Great cast. Lou Taylor Pucci never fails to deliver in his indie films.
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil: OH. MY. GOD. Funniest shit I have ever seen in my life. Horror comedy about college kids camping in the forest when they run across hillbillies, Tucker and Dale, and then assume that Tucker and Dale are going to kill them.
Waking Sleeping Beauty: Besides the big films I saw this week (Kick-Ass, Macgruber, etc) this was the one I was most excited for before anything else. And the main reason I stayed until Sunday. Wonderful doc about the creation of Disney's new animation department in the mid 80s that led to The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, etc. Sad, funny, and unexpected. It's so strange to think of all the drama and business deals that took place to shape my childhood.
Dance with the One: One of my least favorites from the festival. It was about drug dealers in Texas. Really contrived, poor editing, bad acting, poor sound. Just blah. The story was decent, but not very captivating.
Jean-Michel Basquiat-The Radiant Child: I had barely ever heard of this artist, which made the whole documentary that much more interesting. Brilliant artist in the 80s that sold his first painting to Blondie, dated Madonna, and was best friends with Andy Warhol. He had a crazy life and I'm glad I got to learn about him.
Four Lions: A comedy about terrorists. Genius premise. Executed perfectly. I hope America is ready for this. Loved it.
American- Bill Hicks: I'm ashamed to say I hadn't really heard about Bill Hicks before this. I'm sure I have, but I had never paid attention. Sad and funny life story of the comedian Bill Hicks. I really enjoyed it. I liked that the director told the story through animated photos from Bill's life.
hitRECord.org Midnight screening: Not really a movie. Basically Joseph Gordon-Levitt hosted a big party, showed some clips created on his website, tried (and succeeded) to get everyone involved in the creation of videos. Sean mother fucking Lennon performed. Dance party. Alcohol. So much fun. I got a picture and hug with JGL. I look so happy that the picture is almost too embarrassing to post. Hahaha. It was a great way to end my crazy week at SXSW.
Ahhh I can't believe it's over! I had the best week ever, I think.
I think tomorrow I'll post a top 5 list or something. Thanks for being interested in my adventures in Austin, TX!
