The battery in my digital camera died about half an hour after arriving at Osaka Castle Park today. So I ended up being a little more careful with the composition of my pictures since there aren't any take-backs with film.

I'm starting to wish I had been able to shoot a couple more test rolls with this camera before I left. Anybody else shoot film? Its been a couple years since I last did, so any advice would be nice.

also put up some of my mom's pictures off her camera.

(Edit) also apparently happy 200 booth to me... glad it had some undies in it :P

@NathanSt I did pick up a roll of 800 and a roll of 1600 to shoot at night which I've actually never done. Kinda scared of it truthfully, not sure how I'm supposed to balance light sources with something that sensitive.

Happy 200! I shoot with film sometimes, not too often, though. I usually use b&w film at weddings and stuff to get some more original b&w's instead of just a transferred digital image. I've used film for some advertisement stuff in the past year or so, too.

What kind of camera are you packin?

meter off the brightest light, you can probably even push into heavy over-exposing safely

regular film is so much more forgiving

@mikeyv Yashica TL Electro X. Its pretty much an exact copy of a Pentax Spotmatic II except it uses a pair of LEDs instead of a needle for the light meter. And it was a couple hundred dollars less.

or you could figure out the digital to film equivalents and use your mom's camera for more advanced metering

@NathanSt HAHAHAHA, I could. I figure for the most part with the 800 I'll just let it bleed a bit and play around with it some. But the 1600 I think I'm going to have to just shoot on even light sources.

That is the exact camera my dad gave me when I was a kid and learned how to shoot on. haha Good camera. Solid body, well made, takes some great photos.

The best way to figure everything out is just read up on some basics if you haven't already and then play around with a couple rolls of film. Pick something you really want to take a photo of and set it up on a tripod if you can, or something stead, and play around with the setting and write down what each slide was, like what settings and whatever, and I think that gives you the greatest perspective right away of what each setting will do to a photo. Do it in a couple different scenarios so you can see it change in different light sources and stuff.

Woo, sorry for the paragraph. haha

if you get really desperate try to find an Olympus Stylus Epic (non-zoom, less to go wrong) for cheapsies used

it's the best cheap camera ever to my knowledge: basically weatherproof, great metering, awesome low-light

@mikeyv AWESOME. I really like this camera, it was love at first sight when i found it at the Goodwill just before I left. I've shot on film in the past, its just been a while, unfortunately being in Japan limits my options a bit, not really sure how getting film developed here would work.

@NathanSt Baby Jesus knows theres enough used camera shops here that I should be able to hunt one down.

NOM Im not too sure what I got, but its amazing. Its like ground chicken patty with onions and some kind of sauce in between two rice "buns." I swear Mos Burger is trying to make me hate American burgers.

@mikeyv Yup been here with my mom since the 4th. Its been pretty rad. Its my second time being here so its a little less stressful and I've been able to just relax and enjoy it more. How was Lodon? Only been to France, but I really want to check out England and Germany sometime.

London's been great. I just wish I got more of a chance to spend time and really explore the city and some off the not so touristy things around here. But it's been a great few days here! It's quite a bit chillier than Nice, though, so I am looking forward to getting back to the warm sunshine and Mediterranean. haha

I definitely want to make it to Japan some day, too! Is it expensive over there?

@mikeyv It depends on how you do it. I have the hookups on my hotels, but even if you don't you can find ok places for not too much money. Plus as long as you keep your transportation cost down (using a good Japanese tourist group for tickets, traveling on subway instead of taxi, getting a JR Rail Pass) and not spending too much on souvenirs (I fail super hard at this) you can do it for fairly cheap. Last time I spent a little over 2 grand American for a little over two weeks, and this time it looks like I'll be out about the same unless I keep shopping.
