Really though, for that whole section of the course I just spent every lecture counting the amount of times my lecturer said "Piaget"; she loved the man xD
I think that it is a rather accurate way to sum up the way that children learn best as it allows the child to explore the world for themselves and learn in their own way but have an adult to help guide them through it which makes the social constructivist theory better than the laissez-faire theory (child led) and transmission theory (adult led).
I know a little too much about these theories *is currently doing c/w on it* :)
Actually you guys, Piaget's theory actually underestimated what children could do due to his poor methodology, challenged by studies such as Donaldson's, McGarrigle & Donaldson's, and Bower and Wishart's. The idea of splitting development into seperate stages is quite misleading, as children could effectively 'straddle' more than one at once. Research by Meadows found that direct peer tutoring could speed up learning, which Piaget didn't account for. Although cross-cultural studies have confirmed that this model of cognitive development is universal and therefore probably biological, Piaget put far too much focus on the cognitive and ignored social and emotional factors. However, his theory did provide strong opportunities for application to education.
@lexcanroar that kinda makes sense, I think some of it's returning to me... but I didn't know that much to start off with so... meh, I've relearnt something today, thanks for that :)
Ohgosh. :/
What bit of psychology is this?
I've never had to learn Piaget's theory of cognitive development during my two years of studying A-Level psychology. :P
@lexcanroar A real one or a mock? GOOD LUCK ANYWAY! =]
Ohdeaarz. I did Relationships, Evolutionary Psychology and the one about sleep, dreaming and body clocks.
Good luck with your exam. I'm doing relationships, aggression and biological rhythms on friday. I reckon relationships will be a breeeze! The others are insanely long - so many researchers names to remember! fdlsfjlks
@lexcanroar Eek! You'll do fiiiiiine! Just remember the important names and try and rant and waffle on about them. That tends to get a few marks.
And don't panic. Like I do. :P @saskiajulie BIOLOGICAL RHYTHMS! That's what the sleep/dreaming/body clocks was properly called. :P Good luck with your exam if you're doing the same one on Friday! =]
@lexcanroar you ever see piaget, you tell him he can suck it from me!
bloody schemas, assimilation, accomodation bleeeeeh being a teacher best be worth having to write essay upon essay about him!
