I don't know if anyone has ever seen this...it's one of the covers for looking for alaska that didn't get used. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to share it...but it can't hurt now right? Just found it deep in my inbox.
I'm honestly not a fan. Photographically I like the composition, texture and overall image, but I don't like the gradient, but I'm bias there. But, in general, I like simple book covers. As far as essence goes, I think they're both good imagery in different ways. The candle is more symbolic, which I like, but again I'm slightly bias because I have a thing for candles and smoke. Oops, this was more writing than necessary, but whatever.
I actually prefer this to the one that was used. It's a beautiful picture, and I think it would have encouraged more boys to read the novel. But I like the US candle cover, and the UK flower one, too.
I definetly prefer this version, to both the candle and the flower. Maybe it's the pretty colours or the fact I can finally picture Pudge now, but I love love love this cover.
I like this cover...but honestly, this cover makes it look like an assigned reading for a middle school english class (which it most certainly is not)
i think the candle looks more intriguing, but i like this cover better than the flower
Hmm. I Definitely don't like this. It's like Alaska's supposed to be in the lake. And it looks too much like one of the covers of A Separate Peace. Of course, they are somewhat similar novels.
But the ambiguity of the candle smoke cover fits the novel really well - you're waiting and counting down to find out what the huge event is. Then it finally comes and you're completely depressed, so the blackness works (plus the symbolism of a flame being snuffed out makes an analogy for death). This cover is way too literal. It gives away the story too fast.
The cover of a book completely alters the reading experience. It has such a heavy influence on the way a book feels. This cover is too colorful (but then, was the strawberry color by the water just a coincidence?), so it makes the novel have less weight. And the weight of the story is what makes this novel stand out.
Ugh! and one more thing! Pudge is so not a sepia character! He's way too interesting to be put into sepia! If anything, Pudge should be the one in color, and the background should be in sepia.
