This is a comprehensive account of the semantics and the implementation of the whole Lisp family of languages, namely Lisp, Scheme and related dialects. It describes 11 interpreters and 2 compilers, including very recent techniques of interpretation and compilation. The book is in two parts. The first starts from a simple evaluation function and enriches it with multiple name spaces, continuations and side-effects with commented variants, while at the same time the language used to define these features is reduced to a simple lambda-calculus. Denotational semantics is then naturally introduced. The second part focuses more on implementation techniques and discusses precompilation for fast interpretation: threaded code or bytecode; compilation towards C. Some extensions are also described such as dynamic evaluation, reflection, macros and objects. This will become the new standard reference for people wanting to know more about the Lisp family of languages: how they work, how they are implemented, what their variants are and why such variants exist. The full code is supplied (and also available over the Net). A large bibliography is given as well as a considerable number of exercises. Thus it may also be used by students to accompany second courses on Lisp or Scheme. Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: French

From the Publisher: This best-selling book, now in its fourth edition, provides a wide-ranging and in-depth discussion of programming language concepts. As in previous editions, the author describes fundamental concepts of programming languages by presenting design issues of the various language constructs, examining the design choices for these constructs in a few common languages, and critically comparing the design alternatives. The book covers the most widely used methods of syntax description and introduces the most common approaches to describing the semantics of programming languages. Discussions of implementation methods and issues are integrated throughout the book.

Starting Out With C++: Early Objects is intended for either a one semester traditional introductory programming course or a two-semester C++ programming sequence, with introductory material placed in the first half of the text and more advanced topics, such as recursion and data structures, placed in the second half. Objects are introduced early, right after control structures and before arrays and pointers. The STL string class is used throughout. As with all Gaddis books, there is a strong emphasis on problem solving and program design, a careful step-by-step introduction of each new topic, clear and easy to read code listings, concise and practical real world examples, and an abundance of exercises in each chapter. From the Back Cover Shelving Tag: Introductory Programming/C++  Starting Out with C++: Early Objects (formerly Alternate Version), 5/e Tony Gaddis, Haywood Community College Judy Walters, North Central College Godfrey Muganda, North Central College ISBN: 0-321-38348-6   The Starting Out with C++ textbook series has students raving. It presents introductory programming concepts in a student-friendly and accessible step-by-step way, ensuring that beginning programmers understand each programming topic.   “My school’s first programming class uses Starting Out with C++. I love your C++ book–it makes everything so easy to understand!” –Christopher Savage, student at Augusta State University   “I’m using your book in an introductory course in C++. Your book is GREAT!! It abstracts the complexity of C++ down to the core concepts that we can build on. Thanks!” –Jim Burke, student at University of Texas at Dallas   In addition to Gaddis’ emphasis on practical examples, abundant practice exercises, and focus on problem solving and program design, Starting Out with C++: Early Objects, 5e (formerly called “Alternate Version”): • Follows the ANSI standard and uses the most currently accepted programming practices • Covers both procedural and object-oriented programming • Introduces classes in Chapter 7, right after control structures and functions • Has new appendices on UML and on .NET and Managed C++ • Illustrates concepts and techniques with over 350 fully runnable example programs• Includes dozens of MyCodeMate programming challenges

Download HISTORY OF PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES Ebook

    http://softco.in/mov.php?sid=8&tds-id=History-of-programming-languages

This comprehensive overview of programming languages, their history, current application, and future direction, is based on the proceedings of the second conference on the History of Programming Languages. Its contents include a summary of the HOPL conferences, plus sections addressing successful programming languages by some of the most prominent names in computing. From the Back Cover This specially prepared work comprises a living archive of important programming languages, described by the people most instrumental in their creation and development. Drawn from the ACM/SIGPLAN Second History of Programming Languages Conference, this volume, like the earlier book from the first such conference (HOPL), conveys the motivations of the language designers, and the reasons why they rejected existing languages and created new ones. The book relates the processes by which different languages evolved, in the words of the individuals active in the languages' development. Most important, participants share insights about influences and decisions, both on choices made, and on the many roads not taken. In the book's conclusion, distinguished historians of computing share views about preserving programming language history. Fourteen chapters cover a broad range of languages in wide use today, as well as lesser known languages that made significant contributions to programming language evolution: C, C++, Smalltalk, Pascal, Ada, Prolog, Lisp, ALGOL 68, FORMAC, CLU, Icon, Forth, Monitors and Concurrent Pascal, and Discrete Simulation Languages. Prominent contributors to the book are Frederick Brooks, Alain Colmerauer, Richard Gabriel, Ralph Griswold, Per Brinch Hansen, Alan Kay, C.H. Lindsey, Barbara Liskov, Richard Nance, Elizabeth Rather, Dennis Ritchie, Jean Sammet, Guy Steels, Bjarne Stroustrup, William Whitaker, and Niklaus Wirth. Together, the conference contributors and the book's editors have put together a volume of interest to researchers, teachers, students, and computing professionals everywhere who are involved in the use or the development of programming languages today. 0201895021B04062001

This book offers a comprehensive perspective to modern topics in complexity theory, which is a central field of the theoretical foundations of computer science. It addresses the looming question of what can be achieved within a limited amount of time with or without other limited natural computational resources. Can be used as an introduction for advanced undergraduate and graduate students as either a textbook or for self-study, or to experts, since it provides expositions of the various sub-areas of complexity theory such as hardness amplification, pseudorandomness and probabilistic proof systems.
