I should really stop working in a second hand book shop...
Today I picked up a number of things...
Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything, a light hearted book about science! (Science, it works bitches!) - Makes a change from the
hard core Stephen Hawking style I normally delve into.
Along with that, I picked up a book of Pascal (why not).
I also picked up tour guide books for The Royal Pavilion and Arundel Castle, for my girlfriend. She loves all our historic palaces and castles.
The main thing, however, was Saving Private Ryan Limited Edition...
It contains the film itself, several photographic stills from the film, anf a framed clipping of movie reel. Awesome.
It all comes in a nice box too!
How much did that all cost me?
£2.
And they threw in several ring binders and a whole ton of plastic wallets for university.
Win.
Any interesting bargain stories?8 commentsJanuary 31st, 2011

Playstation booth
I've got my earpiece on, playing some super tactical SOCOM online with friends.
I'm doing badly. Very badly. :(
Sad times.
Since today we handed in our group project, I decided to treat myself to an afternoon of nothing.
I bought some milk, played some playstation, and will shortly be going to bed. So nice to have a nothing day!
I have a programming assignment to do by next week, but I have no worries about that.

Finished booth!
I hold here in my hand 21 pages of finished database assignment.
I've been at it for days :(
Such a harsh assignment.
90% of our class has vowed never to touch a database again after this, that's how horrible it was.
Such a weight off my mind to have it done!
I skipped part of it altogether. Most of the rest of it is half assed... but it should be enough to pass the subject completely.
Fingers crossed!
But my night isn't over....
Still got plenty of group work to get done before tomorrow and more before Wednesday.
Anyone want to get me a coffee? Or several?1 commentJanuary 24th, 2011

Coursework booth?
This is just a taste of the amount of work I have to do.
What you see is the assignment outline and some notes and extra information for just one of my assignments due in next week.
There's a couple of dozen pages here.
This is actually for a group project, in which I am the Scribe. It's my job to collate and finish the project for my group.
So far I've got 23 pages mocked up in draft for the portfolio, with about the same again to be added tomorrow.
After that, I can give the draft to my group and get any changes to be completed by Tuesday for final copy hand in on Wednesday.
A lot of work. Why did I volunteer to do this??
Stressed much?
On top of this, I have my databases assignment.
So much data entry to do, and I know my database doesn't actually work properly! :'(
It's just been hacked together and it shows.
I have to finish that and type up the whole report by Tuesday.
Panic.
Thankfully I already have a good percentage in that class, so I don't need to score too highly on this!
By next week I need to write a C program for creating a football league with 10 teams each playing each other twice. I have to store each game and be able to retrieve each teams history on demand.
The good thing is I have been doing programs like this for weeks to occupy myself in programming lessons which I haven't found challenging enough, so I'm certain I can complete this one relatively easily!
Wish me luck!
When was the last time you were snowed in with paperwork?8 commentsJanuary 22nd, 2011

Bargain booth!
So, I started volunteering at BHF Books and Music store last weekend.
It fills the time and I feel like I'm being proactive whilst unemployed.
As an added bonus, I get staff discount on top of the ridiculously low charity shop prices!
In one afternoon I sifted through a whole load of stock and snagged these for myself.
Oblivion (PC Game)
2 sci-fi novels (Prey and 13th Warrior by M. Crichton)
1 French book for my mother
1 Two Ronnies book for my father
7 Mavel graphic novels.
All of that for less than £15.
And, I sold the graphic novels to a friend for £20.
Little bit of cheeky profiteering going on there, oops!
Ever find a hidden gem in a charity shop?
Also, major apology is in order considering my lack of activity over the past week+
I'm not making excuses but my workload is ridiculous at the moment.
I have an entire football league sorting/recording program to write in C.
I have a technical support database to hack together.
I have an entire group project to collate and finish.
I have a couple of exams to revise for...
Urgh, stress much?
But yes, I shall endeavour to fit in a couple of minutes every day to booth for you guys!
If I don't, please make me! Pester me with messages or something >.<4 commentsJanuary 20th, 2011

Wedding booth
Saturday was my sister's wedding, and you can see I made an effort to be presentable! (bottom photo far right, in case you couldn't tell)
I like to think I scrub up pretty well with a three figure suit (£££) and some shiny shoes!
I don't think I have ever enjoyed a wedding as much as this one.
For starters, it was held in a beautiful mansion in the Gloucestershire countryside, with unspoilt views from every window.
The sun made an effort, coming out specially for the ceremony.
(As the music faded in after they were pronounced married, we realised it was the Doctor Who theme tune. TOTALLY FREAKING AWESOME.)
After the ceremony there were drinks, speeches, food, photos, and even a magician.
Of course, the evening was rounded off with a bit of a shindig.
I'm not normally one for dancing, but my Brother in law asked me to join in and enjoy myself...
In the end, I barely left the dance floor until the evening drew to a close!!
I thoroughly enjoyed myself, as did everyone who went.
The next wedding I have to look forward to is of course my own ^_^
Question of the day:
Do you like weddings?14 commentsJanuary 9th, 2011

Book booth
I'm getting so close to the end of my book, its getting very exciting!
Rouge Squadron (the legendary squadron who blew up the deathstars) are acting under cover on the core world of Corusant, in an effort to topple the remnants of the imperial empire.
Only 40 pages to go, and the squadron have got to disable the planet shields for the New Republic fleet to move in and liberate the planet...
Tense!
Only another 6 books in the series after this.
I might have to give it a break though, read another book for a short while.
I love this series, it is all about the X-wing pilots so appeals to both the aviator and the obsessed starwars fan in me!
But sometimes you can do with a bit of a change of scenery.
Ever get the same feeling?
Ever get the same feeling about a series of books or films?
Ps, sorry for the lack of booths lately, have got a very heavy uni schedule at the moment and have been a little stressed out!
Normal service should resume shortly!

Angry booth.
Today I went for a nice walk along brighton beach, and witnessed a shocking display of selfishness and rudeness.
I watched as the actions and words of one person brought a grown man to tears.
A gentleman of around mid 50s was obviously having some difficulties walking along the promenade, and managed to stagger to a nearby bench.
He politely (though quite shaky) asked a woman to move her bicycle in order to sit down and recover. As she went to move it, her young (20s) male companion stepped in and said
"No, can't you see we're already sitting here?"
The older man said "but these benches can sit 3 or 4"
Younger man, with some venom
"we've got this bench, go and find another"
Older man, considerably distressed
"but I don't think I can make it that far"
Young man
"well that's your problem"
The older man had to stagger to the next bench a hundred yards further on, using the promenade railings as support to stop himself physically collapsing on the floor. He could barely walk at all.
He made it to the bench, where he slumped, tears running down his cheeks.
He was broken.
He had already been quite clearly in a lot of difficulty and distress as it was, and the attitude of this younger man had just snapped his composure.
How can people be so selfish and cause that much hurt for another?
Especially when it is clear to anyone that the person is in need of help...
Please, DB, restore my faith in humanity?

"Awesome mug - not so awesome drink" booth
I love this mug, with pacman (or a non-copy-write infringing version) that all magically appears when it gets hot.
Unfortunately when I got back from Bristol, there was no milk in the house. Therefore, no tea.
I had to settle for one of those fruit infusion things, and it doesn't taste too good. Mangosteen superfruit, apparently.
It tastes like bath water...
So I shouldn't really have gone away for Christmas. I have a bit of a backlog of university work to cover before going back next week.
Urgh.
I should really be doing it right now, but I am procrastinating as always!
How was your Christmas break, everyone?6 commentsDecember 30th, 2010

Christmas booth!
Since I will be away at my sister's house for the next 4 days, I am afraid I won't be able to booth!
But as a treat, I decided to show you a couple of the gifts I have been given so far. Frustrating having to wait until the 28th (the day I get home) before I can actually open them!
I know that this small stack contains (bottom to top):
- A box of chocolate biscuits
- Lynx shower gel/deodorant
- A desk calendar (which I will never use)
- A white shirt (thanks, mum)
- Gran Tourismo 5
Of course, those are only the ones I have guessed.
I have a few more waiting for me which I am unsure of the contents... fairly certain there is a book, a small wooden puzzle thing (we ALWAYS get one), some sort of Christmas chocolate selection, and one or two other curiously shaped items.
Anyway, I better go get some sleep before the long day driving tomorrow.
I might pop in over Christmas if I can...
If not,
I wish you all a very merry Christmas, see you all on the 28th!3 commentsDecember 23rd, 2010
