Fakes. Being fake is such a big problem in our society, both in "real life" and on the internet. How many times do we see profiles on social networks of the same "emo" girl or boy. What about people who make up stories of their lives. I bet all of us have gotten those guilt tripped messages such as "I'M REALLY DEPRESSED RIGHT NOW AND I HAVE NO FRIENDS AT ALL, EVERYONE HATES ME AT SCHOOL AND I JUST WANT TO KILL MYSELF." Yeah, I do admit there are a lot of depressed kids and a lot of people really don't have too many friends, but in reality there are a lot of attention grabbers out there. As my dear friend @brewstah told me the other day, he believes that on the internet you somewhat have to be an even more honest person. I completely agree with that. The easiness to tell other people online about your life issues or life problems is pretty obvious. This is probably because they actually don't know anyone that you talk to or know (unless IRL friends are online too). The thing is, some people abuse this privilege by telling other people lies about themselves to make themselves look cooler than they actually are. Thing is, when the bomb falls that you weren't actually telling the truth you are completely going to wish you never did such a thing, I hate to do this, but I can say I have no real connection to this girl so I feel it's okay if I do such a thing. A certain female form my school, of whom I don't even know the name to (since my school is pretty big as my graduating class this year is about 300 people), said that her mother had passed on to the next life. This lie had gone on for quite some time and different candidates of this lie had grieved with the "poor" and "lonely" girl. Soon her mother had picked her up from school instead of taking the bus. A girl had caught her and asked who the lady was, the girl had responded her aunt, but another friend passed by addressing the mother shouting an abrupt hi. The girl, of course, was not in the know of the lie, and BAM little miss "my mother died" was busted. For the longest time all the school could speak about was the girl who lied about her mother died. Now, the girl lost a good chunk of her friends and probably screwed up her chances at making new ones for a bit of time. I can't say what actually happened to her though and I can't really say how she felt as I still don't know her, but if I ever was put in that situation (especially at her age) I would feel like the biggest idiot. Why is it acceptable to be such a fake over the internet if it's not acceptable in real life? Shouldn't the same rules apply? I know that I'm a pretty real person online. I can tell you all the pictures I post are me. The life stories I tell people are real. You can ask any of my friends. I have never understood the whole "lie about yourself" online act. Even back when I was 10 or 11. I did it once on Neopets because I thought I'd be cooler, but honestly it was the stupidest experience of my life. I remember I lied about one gig I had saying that it was much bigger than it actually was and everyone was asking me for proof so I told them that it was set on fire (thinking it was clever). Truthfully, I'm a pretty bad liar (which I think is a pretty good thing). But the same week I was expelled from the guild I was in, I was receiving a bunch of hate "neomail" and basically I thought my life was over. You know how it is at such a young age. I learned from way back then that honesty is the best action course to take, especially online, because I can say I do not want to be talking to a fake. I don't want to fear that everyone I talk to is a liar and won't have an honest conversation. I want to know that every time someone says that they like me both online and offline is real. I also want to know that I can trust people no matter what and I bet a lot of you feel the same way. My challenge for you is to be the most real person you can be on the web. I'm not saying tell everyone your life story, because honestly not even my best friend Ann knows it as it takes a lot of trust to tell a person such a thing, but honestly don't fake anything for others to think you are cool or better than you actually are.
