"If, on a summer's night, a wreath of light glittered on the grass of a meadow, wise mortals drew away. The light was a fairy ring of elfin dancers, and the man or maid who stepped within its glow would be imprisoned in their world."
But if that world was Tír na nÓg - a land where no one got sick and no one ever grows old; an endless celebration of life and beauty, then maybe it wouldn't be so bad to step into the ring of flowers and light.
These stories were a source of great inspiration and comfort to me when I was a child (they still are). I wanted to escape to a world like this, away from my problems on Earth. I liked to imagine that I would spot a gateway to another world somewhere in the woods, and that it would lead me to adventure!
What did you fantasize about when you were a child? And what do you fantasize about now?

Tell me about the future! What predictions do you have for what our lives will be like? I know @TsiTimelord thinks about the future!
Here are a few of mine:
1. We'll have found a way to meld technology with our brains so that we can access the internet, make "head calls" to other people, watch movies, listen to music and even achieve erotic stimulation by tricking our senses! No more computers when our brains will do it all.
2. We will be able to "rent" information that we'll download into our heads from internet companies. Need to learn Chinese for your vacation? You can rent it for one month for just 79.95, or buy it for 649.95! After the time period is up, the info will scramble and be lost.
3. For a fee, parents will be able to go to a private gene-sculpter and mix and match the traits of their unborn child (this will be a bad thing). Want a heterosexual boy with black hair and green eyes who is biologically superior in all ways to regular, crappy babies? Pay up.
4. Cars will drive themselves using a perfect GPS/local mapping system. Detours and emergency situations will be constantly streamed into their computer to avoid unnecessary risks. Traffic will be eliminated and a drive to the beach will be as simple as getting in, laying down and watching a movie or sleeping until you get there!
5. Finland will capture the world.22 commentsJuly 1st, 2011

I've only beaten one of these three games, and that was Dragon Age! Fable 3 lost my interest and Fallout NV...there was too much to do! I got so wrapped up in exploring, making new characters and doing sidequests that I forgot about the main quest and never got it done. I really should finish that one, but I also never finished Oblivion, either (even though I put over one hundred hours into it).
Next game I'm really looking forward to is Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. What about you guys? Any games you're waiting for?

I think that adults often take the feelings of teenagers for granted. We imagine them to be irrational or attention-seeking and call it "angst". And then, when a teeanger takes their own life, we are bewildered because most of us have forgotten how we felt when *we* were teens.
They found the body of a 19-year-old in the park near my house today. They had been searching for him for awhile, because he was despondent over a break-up. Apparently, he'd found a spot with a pretty view and shot himself.
Why is there such a communication gap between parents and their teen children? Is it a desire to be emotionally independant on the teen's side, or a dismissive attitude on the parent's side, or both? I never talked to my mom about my issues, either! Whenever she asked me how thing's were, I always said "fine", even if there were tears streaming down my face. Why do parents and kids start out like one heart, then gradually build a wall between each other?
If I could have spoken to the young man before he killed himself, I would have told him that he had his whole life ahead of him, that this was just one relationship of many, a single lesson from a lifetime of love.
Do you guys have any input? How do/did you get along with your parents?4 commentsMay 7th, 2011

Saw 'Hanna' the other night for the second time. It's a good movie, though I didn't like the last half hour all that much. I'd definitely recommend that you at least rent it once it's done at the theatres! It's well-acted and I loved the score.
Have you seen any good movies lately?

That's me on the right with my friend Ryan. I think it was around 1986 or '87. The two of us were very good friends because, not only were we neighbors, but we were also both an "only child" being raised by a single mom! He and I had a lot of good times together.
Ryan has since grown up and started his own family. We've lost touch, but I'm glad everything has worked out for him =)

I read an article recently where a scientist postulated that black holes could be gateways to other universes (not that matter-based life such as ourselves could survive the journey. It implied that our own universe might be the interior of another universe's black hole!
Thinking about the universe is an awe-inspiring and frustrating process. The human mind just can't truly grasp the concept of "infinity". The closest star to our solar system is 4 light years away, or...24 trillion miles. Some of the furthest stars we are aware of are 10-15 billion light years away, an incomprehensible number of miles.
What role do we play? The universe was around for 13 billion years before us and will probably still be around for another many billion years after. Are we smaller than a speck of dust in the "big picture"?
There is a theory that eventually the universe may contract, that it may suck itself back down to a singularity and then explode again into a new universe!
What do you think?9 commentsMarch 23rd, 2011

Retro booth, circa 1980 or '81.
It's me...on a slide!
I look happy, don't I? When I look at pictures from when I was a child, I have a hard time relating to the human being I was back then. I feel like a completely different person; it's hard to make a connection to the boy I see here.
What do you see when you look at old photographs of yourself? Do you know the 5-year-old "you", the one who gleefully hopped in puddles and pretended that every stick was a sword? Or do you see a stranger that seems vaguely familiar?22 commentsFebruary 13th, 2011

I hope this year is good to you all, and that it brings *good* changes. I've come to realize that my late twenties and early thirties are blending together. It seems like all the "action" of my life happened from 1-25 lol
For those of you who are near to my age or older, do the years creep up on you? And for the younger crowd, is time flying or is growing up taking forever? =)
Much love to you.8 commentsJanuary 9th, 2011
