Sorry to disappear on you folks. I haven't been online much recently and haven't felt up to being photographed.

Last week I was at Disney World and they asked me to pitch in cleaning up the place. I dislodged three small children and a tourist from Poughkeepsie. Trolls! You have to watch them every minute!

Was up all night, trying to get word on family in southwest Missouri. Turned out that all are well, but the devastation in Joplin defies description.
I've seen a lot of tornadoes in my lifetime. My earliest memories are dominated by musty basements and the distant wail of sirens. I've been one of a line of many, huddled on the cold tile with my head against a locker and fingers interlaced behind my head as we waited for the all clear...
And even so, the damage in Joplin beggars even my memories. Defies my imagination.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Many of my followers here and elsewhere are also writers. Bestselling YA author Maureen Johnson is leading a group of writers who are auctioning off professional writing critiques to raise money for Joplin and/or the Red Cross. I cannot tell you how valuable such a thing is.
Also: If you can, please give blood. The state of Missouri has sent out a call for blood, expecially Type O Negative (universal donor). The closer you are to Missouri, the better, of course.3 commentsMay 23rd, 2011

Things I know...
- A woman is never pregnant until she tells you she is.
- Sentimental value is the only value with any real lasting value.
- Time spent with loved ones is never wasted, no matter what you're doing.
- All of the most amazing acts performed by men throughout history were done to impress a girl. Almost none of the amazing acts performed throughout history by women were to impress a guy.
- Cooking is about keeping things simple and infusing them with love.
- Practice makes perfect.
- Never stop seeking the perfect that practice makes.
- You will never be perfect, but that's no reason not to practice.
- Reality will never live up to the fiction, especially in plot and pacing.
- In the end, the only thing you get to take with you is the good wishes of those who loved you. If you don't have that, you have nothing.5 commentsMay 15th, 2011

"Remember above all things, Kid, that to write is not difficult, not painful, that it comes out of you with ease, that you can whip up a little tale in no time, that when you are sincere about it, that when you want to impress a truth, it is not difficult, it is not painful, but easy, graceful, full of smooth power, as if you were a writing machine with a store of litereature that is boundless, enormous, endless, and rich. For it is true. This is so. Remember it in your gloomier moments."
-Jack Kerouac
I dig that cat on the front of my book. And though this book is full of his lesser-known and not altogether successful stories, I love that quote. Because the editor's no slouch, it's featured on the back of this book and typed up (on my clattering old typewriter, of course) and posted on the wall of my study. Because these things are worth remembering, even when they don't feel true.
I've been writing a series of open letters to my nephews, who are growing up far too fast and far too far away from me. They're interested in writing (mostly, I suspect, because their Uncle Scott is) so sitting down to write them a letter is a good prompt when I sit down to write about writing, or creativity, or most recently, in defense of being silly in serious times...

Oh dear. It's Good Friday, isn't it? I should lay out my rabbit traps before I go back to my typewriter. Here bunny bunny bunny...1 commentApril 22nd, 2011

About
I am a natural force for the transition of coffee into words. I'm the author of the free online serial story "Howard Carter Saves the World" and I also blog about writing.

They're following
Television
Television is good for a laugh... but then I turn it on and the actual shows ruin the effect.
