I know its a @repost, but it would be nice if my followers could take the time to read this:
I just got back from WSU for State FFA Convention. I got 4th individual and my team got 3rd in state. It was pretty fun for...the most part, but something very strange happened while I was there. I don't have any close friends in FFA, so I hung out with a girl in my team named Kara (changed to protect identity). I thought it would be fun to be her roommate...What I didn't realize at the time was that I was about to be thrown into a whole other world, into her life in an unexpected way. She had told me about her boyfriend, and I heard her one-sided arguments with him that went long into the night. On the second night, she was on speaker phone with him in our room. She grabbed a bobby pin and tried biting the plastic tip off, but she couldn't. She then grabbed something from her side of the dorm, sat in my chair with her head down, and listened to her boyfriend rant on and on, calling her names and blaming her for everything. Her friend Kayla exclaimed, "Kara, what are you doing....?" No response. "KARA, what are you DOING!?" Both Kayla and I jumped up from where we sat and ran up to her. Her head snapped up, gabbing the phone and turning the speaker phone off. "Where is it, Kara," Kayla asked. "Where's what?" "Turn off the phone," Kayla demanded. Kara hesitated while Kayla looked at her sternly. Slowly, Kara snapped the phone shut, not losing eye-contact with her friend. "Now, where's the razor?" "It wasn't a razor," Kara whispered, "It was tweezers." "C'mon, show me," Kayla motioned. Kara slowly lifted her arm, lightly smoothing over the scrapes she had made on her inner-forearm with her thumb. "It's all right," she said, "I didn't break the skin or anything." Kayla replied with, "Give me your phone. You are not to have it if he calls again."
Later that night, she had found out that he had hacked her facebook, posted awful things about her, and changed her password so that she couldn't log in. She sat and cried for the next few days, talking to a new friend of hers for hours that helped her manage the pain. She said that there was no one that understood her more than her boyfriend, and it was people like him that made her trust the world that much less.
I expected a good week of convention and competition. What I got was a lesson. You see, I was put into a very awkward situation and pretty much disliked my whole week because of that. On top of that, I had to handle bratty girls talking behind one another, knowing that there was alcohol in my room at one point, holding back from telling on a group of girls were thinking about sneaking out, and knowing that my roommate then hooked up with a person they knew for one day at the convention. Sure, I was uncomfortable and disliked my visit there, but who am I to complain when a girl I thought I was friends with was having one of the worst moments in her life? She dealt with abuse, both verbal and physical, resorted to gaining attention from others because she felt lonely, and sometimes blacking out and waking up with cuts on her frail body. Who am I to complain about my own experience at that point?
Know this: we all have our problems. Some are more severe than others, and most likely than not, people you don't even know, have it a lot worst than you do. Make sure that you are still aware that your world isn't the only world functioning, or should I say malfunctioning, at the very moment. Help those that have it worse, even if you don't think you're very good at it...just hope that you being there made a difference somehow. At least, I hope I did this week...
