* 1 pair of high-waisted jeans shorts
* 1 sachet of fabric dye the colour of your choice
* 1 block of sandpaper OR a pumice stone
* 1 large bucket (for dying)
* 1 block of wood OR a hard-back book you hate
* (possibly a sewing machine)
* a lot of spare time
the process:
1. wash and dry your shorts
2. follow the exact instructions on the sachet of dye and leave shorts to dry
3. place the block of wood or hard back book that you hate under the part of the shorts that you want to distress, creating a hard surface and protecting the rest of the material of the shorts
4. ATTACK the area of the shorts that you want to distress with the sandpaper or pumice stone, rubbing it in hard vertical motions across the shorts, NOT up and down.
5. (if the shorts are slightly too big, as second hand clothes almost always are, turn the shorts inside out and sew up and down the seams at the sides slightly further in than the seam until they are a nicer fit . . thats what i do anyway)
where to buy the things you need:
high-waisted jeans shorts can be bought for £10-20 from vintage shops and boutiques. alternatively if you’re on a budget (like me) then i suggest rifling through charity shops for an old pair of high waisted jeans, and cut them to the length you want. use old jeans rather than brand new ones, they are softer and leave a much better result.
fabric dye can be bought from most arts and crafts shops for £3-4. you can also buy it from amazon
sandpaper can be bought from hardware stores (i think) but i used a pumice stone and you can get those from Boots or amazon
i don’t know where you could get a block of wood from but i had an old hardback book that i’d been cutting up anyway and you can get those for about £1 from a charity shop.
