A teen who was told that she may never walk again after being stitched together with 11 metal rods is instead walking in style as a model.
Katrina Burgess, 17, of England, has been recruited by a modeling agency just five months after a vehicle crash left her with severe injuries or breaks to her back, lungs, neck, pelvis, leg and ribs.
To repair her skeletal structure, surgeons attempted risky procedures that could have taken her life or left her paralyzed.
Doctors inserted a metal rod from her left hip to her knee, and then opened up her back to install six more rods along her back to support her spine. An additional titanium screw was fastened at the top of her spine to repair her broken neck.
"It felt strange when I woke up after having it, my neck felt weird and I couldn't sit in certain positions," Burgess told the Daily Mail. "But I was so relieved when I could feel my legs.
"Just a day after the last operation I stood up and then took my first steps straight away."
Five months later after those first steps, she's functioning without the need for painkillers.
A newspaper article detailing her plight came to the attention of the London-based BASE Models, who were drawn to her "fresh face" and plan to use her in teenage and family-oriented campaigns.
Katrina's desire to become a police officer was dashed by her injuries so she said she now aspires to be a nurse.
She is now modeling.

Dear Daily booth,
Every day I see many many, many booths about people insecure and in rough spots with their bodies. I see (or read) about cutting, starvation, bulimia, diets, harmful substance.. embarrassment. This hits rather close too home. I have read at least ten stories that I could relate to, even if it was only slightly.. And I realize how hard it is too see yourself as anything other than the negative imagery. Anyhow.. I made this booth purposely half dressed, half with confidence (Notice I wouldn't face the camera), not too be a 'slut' or be an attention seeker.. But too say, don't change what you look like to match others! Beauty is hidden in your smile, peeking through your curves, blowing through your hair, sparkling in your eyes, spreading though your words and blooming in your thoughts! No matter how hard or cliche you may think it is, you are worth the universe to at least one person! Fall in love with who you are.. Because I promise there isn't another out there the same!
