ATTENTION ONLINE GAMERS!

Ever been told that you're spending WAY too much time gaming?

That you're wasting your life away on it?

That what you're doing in games will never amount to anything IRL?

This smart lady begs to differ: http://www.ted.com/talks/jane_mcgonigal_gaming_can_make_a_better_world.html

    Thanks GAWD...
Am not addicted to online gaming...
Hard to get into such a thing for me.
If I could get paid..or WIN LARGE AMOUNTS OF CASH.
I believe I might get caught up in it for awhile.

That video made me laugh and smile. Because usuially when people are talking about 'epic win's' etc. they arnt using it in such a serious manner haha it was very entertaining. and the people in the audience just laughing the whole time while shes saying 'no no im serious'

Well, actually I agree with Jane McGonigal in this case. Doesn't seem like a bad idea at all. o_o
THIS MAKES ME FEEL SO MUCH BETTER ABOUT SPENDING SO MUCH TIME ON GAMES. xD

@JustAsoul - Aside from some poker. I don't do any online gaming, but for the opposite reason - I tend to be a bit obsessive about these things :) If I allowed myself to get interested in one, I would lose great chunks of my life to it :( For what it's worth though, there are, as I understand it, some really big gaming tournaments now, and the cash prizes can get quite substantial. Not trying to induce a habit in anyone mind you, lol. Just saying.

    @OmgoshPenguins - YOU'RE very welcome :)

@SofiaLaRee - I had the same exact experience while watching it. Best of all, as you mentioned, she was completely aware of how ridiculous her ideas seemed on the surface. But I think her version of "thinking outside the box" is, I think, very commendable. And fun - which really kept with her central theme, lol.

@ihatedanishpastry - I definitely agreed with a lot she said, as well. Personally, I think a great deal of what she believes can be accomplished through gaming will actually be accomplished through social networking sites (and the ways THEY will evolve), but I think she's absolutely spot-on about the way she broke it down: blissful productivity, social fabric, urgent optimism, epic meaning - these are definitely the elements necessary to evoke a grand narrative, and some meaningful change. Gotta love that TED gathering.

@Joseph_Leonardson - Yeah, I agree. I couldn't help but laugh when she started out saying it, but after watching it all - after all she said - I believe that it is a great way to make an influence on people, young aswell as older people. It seems like a great and exciting way to change the world if you ask me. Also I am sure that this way of making games will make young people realize that we have to change. That they can help make the future a better place just as much as everyone else.

@Joseph_Leonardson I think it was a load of bunkem what she was saying. Moments of truth and insightfulness, then off on another tenuous leg of the fanciful flight of her employers desire.

The thing that moved me most was (if it is based on fact) that people have spent 5.3 million years playing WOW!!!

Anyway, what will be will be, who can say it is otherwise without resorting to the imagination...
