But I’m not one of those kids,
And honestly, I’m going to make sure I’m not going to be one of them.
Teenagers aren’t bad people
Sure a lot of us are
Idiots,
Cokeheads,
Stoners,
And posers
But those are the ones that have not found footing in who they are
I’ve been on this earth for 15 years
I’m agnostic
I’m a photographer
I’m completely straight-edge (never done drugs, never drank, never had sex)
I’m a filmmaker
I’ve never punched another person with the purpose of hurting them
I’ve never used a knife for anything other than a tool
And I know who I am
Yes, there are kinds of teenagers that society should look down on
But that doesn’t mean that every time I go to buy a pack of gum,
The 20-something-year-old guy at CVS can stare at me like I’m shit on his shoes.
We don’t disrespect you like we do because we think we’re better than you.
We disrespect you because you’ve given us reason not to respect you by treating us for just being within an age group
And we’re sick of not being taken seriously
We’re not all smokers.
We’re not all drunk.
We don’t all cut ourselves in our rooms every night.
We don’t all wear miniskirts and low pants.
You treat us like this,
And then when you’re too old to cart yourself around,
You complain about the younger generation not supporting you.
Society has turned into a silent war among classes.
Racism, sexism, and ageism don’t blatantly exist
They are the little ideas tucked in the back of our mind.
And they manifest themselves as almost unnoticeable body languages.
We see you stare at us.
We see you look down on us.
We see you try to mold us into little pawns in business suits that will one-day support the world you messed up.
What you see going on in school hallways isn’t people making it from class to class
It’s a war
When you step in there,
You will be judged.
You will be hated.
You will be kicked around.
You will be verbally attacked.
And you have to fight this social warfare without knowing why you have to.
And if you can’t understand that,
Then we’re not the ones that have to grow up."
