This may be the first novel I read of 2012. Well I'm up to Chapter 10... And I gotta say. It's pretty fantastic!

Ok some of the characters are paper thin (*looks at Ozymandias*) but some of them are really interesting and well developed. Yes Nite Owl, I like you, I like you more than you like yourself you little chubby guy with the cute underground base. Oh and besides all your flaws, yes Rorschach, you're pretty intense, very much insane and violent beyond measure, but goddamnit I like you. I like you a lot. You make me laugh when I'm not meant to.

Silk Spectre can go to hell. Like really. She's just vapid and a pain in the arse. Dr Manhattan, although one of the most interesting characters, is equally irritating.

And possibly my favourite character in the media I've concocted so far (apart from probably Tyler Durden, Lt Archie Hicox (that ones shallow mind...), Han Solo and Lisbeth Salander) is certainly The Comedian. Who seems to encapsulate everything that is not supposed to be funny about the American Dream, in fact, everything that is dreadful and scary and unrealistically cruel. That's him. He embraces it. He works it. But what's truly insanely clever about him is that although his bravado and ideals are both reviled and commended by other characters (Rorschach and Dr Manhattan found him to be the most interesting member of the Watchmen, the others thought he was a socio-path, tells you a bit about the characters...). But that's all it is. It's bravado. A joke if you will. He dies because he can't play the game and he's no longer part of it (thats not a spoiler, he dies on the second page). I love his complexities and I love his effect on the others. He's the catalyst for most of the story (apart from a bunch of other less interesting things). But that's my two cents and it's probably wrong but I do. I like him. I can't help it... (You're not meant to though and this worries me...)

So yeah. I recommend this! It's a classic from 1985 so any comic book person probably has already read it but it's still worth looking at if the medium doesn't interest you. There's prose in here! It breaks the chapters up, some of the writing is better than the actually graphics.

My recommendation of the new year.

I also saw the David Fincher version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Holy-Rape-Scenes-Batman! It's not an easy film to watch. I can prove this as several people walked out and didn't come back, one person seemed to be sobbing... Yes. It was hard work. but also a little bit rewarding. A very well made, acted film. Just really fucking long. 158 minutes!! Aside from that, pretty great.
