Long-time followers will know that I have a slightly morbid fascination with death. I find it a curious, humbling and amazing thing.

I join everyone else in mourning Amy Winehouse today, for the simple reason that she was a human, and it is unnatural to not feel moved by death. She was talented, certainly, but she did not change the world. The thing I find most frustrating now is that people seem to be coming out of the woodwork to worship her and complain about jokes.

I'm sorry, but if I remember rightly, during her time alive on this planet, everyone was quite happy to mock her, make fun of her drug-fueled life and talk about what a mess she was, how she had ruined her life and was no role model for children.

What is it about death that makes us scared to talk bad about people who are no longer with us? She may have died, and it is tragic for someone so young to do so, but she was by no means an angel. Do not put her on a pedestal. I didn't see anyone much trying to help her before she died. Why must we now hide her flaws and not make jokes?

It's always the same. Day after day, you read in the news about teenagers who have been stabbed to death, and their parents come out and tell the world what an angel he was, how he would never hurt a fly and was always good as gold. But it begs the question, what was he doing on a building site at 3am with a bread knife then?

I will respect the dead, but I will not change my opinion of them just because they've shuffled off the mortal coil. Amy Winehouse was a drug-addled mess. I'm sorry she's dead, I am, but I will not worship her and what she was. The media is now heralding a lost talent, but wasted no time in hounding her and telling the world how disgusted they were by her drug use.

Why all the respect for the dead, when there's not enough respect for the living?

Sometimes, everything about a particular moment combines to make it truly magical, last night was one of those.
I went up to the hills to catch the sunset and it was so still and warm from the day, with the mist below me and the sun setting behind the clouds. There was no sight or sound of civilisation, just birdsong and the odd dog bark; it was a perfect moment.
This is only one of the many photos I took, and I know it's not a picture me, but it's way more beautiful than me :P
