    @nimbus ECT is still widely used, and has been considered a treatment that works well with specific disorders (ie: DID). Docotors don't use it unless they feel it is necessary and all their other options have failed. It's definitely a last resort. & there are some patience who will request it. It's very, very mild, and in short spurts. They wouldn't do it if they thought it would cause harm to the person.

    NOW if we went back about 40 years, then yes, it was a barbaric thing to do because they would crank the ECT machine higher then necessary.
